Fans of the Netflix crime thriller Dept Q can rejoice, as the streaming giant has officially confirmed a second season. The Scotland-set series was a huge hit, spending six weeks in the global top 10 and earning praise online as “pure greatness.”
Matthew Goode will return as the lead, detective Carl Morck, in the second season, which will once again be filmed in Edinburgh. He will be joined by his team of misfits, including Alexej Manvelov as Akram, Leah Byrne as Rose, and Jamie Sives as Hardy.

The first season of the nine-part show followed Morck as he was relegated to a basement department to work on cold cases. He and Akram cracked the file of a young prosecutor who disappeared four years prior. The series is based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s Scandi-noir novels, and the rights to the books were held by writer and director Scott Frank for over a decade.
Frank expressed his gratitude for the renewal, stating, “I’m grateful to the folks at Netflix, as well as our shining cast and crew, for once more risking their careers to enable my folly.” Goode also shared his excitement, saying, “I cannot wait to read what comes from his magic quill!”
Frank, who was inspired by his love of crime dramas like Line of Duty, admitted that he had owned the rights to the novels for 15 years before bringing them to the screen. “The books, you just knew that they could work that way,” he told Metro. He added that the characters were “really interesting” and could be taken in “so many different directions.”
