Here comes the duck!
A duck has gone viral on social media for playing the role of bride at a couple’s outdoor wedding ceremony on July 5 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Elias Wiklund was standing in front of a blue and white flower arch awaiting his bride, Gabrielle McLymont, when a duck waddled down the aisle instead.
“POV: The bride is ready to walk down the aisle, but this duck had other plans,” wedding guest Michelle Canarick wrote in an onscreen text overlay of a TikTok video of the hilarious moment.
She added in the caption: “No because why did it walk directly to her spot 😂.”
Canarick, 28, has been the bride’s best friend since rushing the same sorority in college. She recalls sitting alongside other wedding guests as they all watched the wedding processional.
“Just as we expected the wedding procession to begin, this lone duck waddled in from the start of the aisle and confidently made its way like it had rehearsed with the rest of the wedding party!” Canarick tells PEOPLE.
The duck instantly captivated everyone’s attention as it walked down the grassy aisle — all the way to an empty spot directly next to the groom.
Guests laughed and pulled out their cellphones to capture the “truly unexpected moment.”
“Everyone was trying so hard to stay composed, but once the duck strutted in, there were audible giggles and gasps,” Canarick says. “You could feel the whole energy shift from serious to lighthearted.”
She continues: “With the groom being from Norway and bride being from New York, this was a great moment to unify the group around something great — laughter. The groom was trying to keep it together, but even he cracked a big smile and giggled. As for the bride, she hadn’t seen it happen in real time, but once she made her entrance and we all told her about it (and showed her the video afterward), she absolutely loved it. She said it made the day even more memorable.”
Eventually, the duck waddled away and Canarick doesn’t remember seeing it again. She notes that there “was a beautiful pond nearby” that the duck could have gone to.
“Safe to say that, looking back, the duck became the unofficial mascot of the day,” Canarick shares. “It was like nature’s own flower girl moment.”
The bride then had her turn walking down the aisle, doing so to the “traditional” tune of “Canon in D” by Johann Pachelbel.
Canarick’s TikTok video amassed 10.6 million views, 1.5 million likes, and more than 12,000 comments.
“Why are they all laughing at the bride on her special day??” the top comment with more than 216,000 likes reads.
“Would you still love me if I was a duck?” a TikTok user joked, with another teasing, “Obviously the bride got turned into a duck and she’s running to tell him before it’s too late but once he accepts her as a duck she’ll be human again.”
“That’s the Mallard Of Honor,” one individual commented.
