A San Antonio man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly making threats against President Donald Trump. The arrest occurred just days before the one-year anniversary of a past assassination attempt on Trump (referring to July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania, as described in the original text) and coincided with Trump’s visit to Texas to survey damage from recent deadly flash floods.
Details of the Alleged Threat
According to a press release from the Justice Department, 52-year-old Robert Herrera commented on a Facebook post from a San Antonio news outlet concerning Trump’s planned visit. Using the username “Robert Herrer,” he allegedly wrote, “I won’t miss,” and included a photo from the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The situation escalated when another user replied to “Robert Herrer’s” post, saying, “You won’t get the chance, I promise.” In response, “Robert Herrer” allegedly replied, “I’ll just come for you,” accompanying this with a photo of an assault rifle and loaded magazines, as stated in the release.
Arrest and Charges
Herrera was arrested the same day the posts were made and is now facing a federal charge of making threats against the President and interstate threatening communications.
U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas commended the inter-agency cooperation. “This case is an example of great cooperation between federal, state, and local law enforcement partners committed to taking down anyone who would threaten the life of the President or anyone else,” Simmons stated in the release. He added, “I want to thank Chief McManus and his team at SAPD for their swift response to this threat. To be clear, these types of threats will not be taken lightly, and we will always take a swift, aggressive approach, as was done here.“
Legal Ramifications and Ongoing Investigation
If convicted of the federal charges, Herrera could face up to five years in federal prison. It is currently unclear if Herrera has retained legal counsel or has been officially arraigned.
The case is being investigated by the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, and San Antonio Police Department, with additional assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
