Bill Maher Calls Himself a ‘Hero’ After Trump Meeting: ‘I Spoke Truth to Power

Bill Maher Defends White House Visit, Calls Himself a ‘Hero’ for Speaking ‘Truth to Power’ to Donald Trump

Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher is defending his controversial recent visit to the White House, where he had a sit-down with former President Donald Trump. While some have criticized the meeting as nothing more than a PR stunt for Trump, Maher is firing back—calling himself a “hero” for taking the opportunity to “speak truth to power.”

Appearing on the April 17 episode of the 2 Angry Men podcast, hosted by TMZ founder Harvey Levin and criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos, Maher addressed the backlash he’s received since details of the meeting surfaced. In particular, he responded to Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin, who recently said on Maher’s own show Real Time that the comedian was being used as a “prop” in a carefully crafted Trump publicity move.

But Maher pushed back on that characterization.

“I would say to them, as opposed to what?” Maher said during the podcast. “I had the opportunity to go to the White House and talk to the president and not give up my principles. It seems like nobody noticed that.”

Maher emphasized that despite the politically polarizing nature of such a visit, he remained true to his values and used the platform to confront Trump directly on issues that matter. He insists that simply having the chance to deliver an unfiltered message to someone in power—without compromise—is a rare and valuable moment, not an act of complicity.

“I didn’t go MAGA,” Maher continued. “I had the opportunity to talk to Donald Trump and say things to him that maybe he never hears, literally to speak truth to power. I shouldn’t take that opportunity? Again, don’t do that? OK.”

Maher described himself as someone who takes risks for the sake of open dialogue, calling his decision to attend the dinner both bold and necessary. In fact, he went as far as to say:

“I’m a hero for going and telling him what no one else has the guts to say.”

His comments sparked immediate reactions online, with fans and critics debating whether Maher’s actions reflect courage or self-indulgence. While some praised him for confronting Trump in person rather than from a distance, others accused Maher of feeding into Trump’s PR machine and giving the former president an image boost at a critical political moment.

The comedian is no stranger to controversy and has long walked a tightrope between political camps. He has been both celebrated and condemned for his willingness to criticize figures across the ideological spectrum, including fellow liberals. Still, his White House visit—and the subsequent framing of himself as a “hero”—marks one of his most divisive moves in recent years.

As the political climate continues to heat up ahead of the 2024 election cycle, Maher’s actions are a reminder that, in today’s media landscape, even a dinner invitation can spark a national debate.
